The short history of the Nantais cake
The Nantes cake, created in the 18th century, tells a part of the history of this port city.
Inaugurating the first rum routes, the shipowners of Nantes brought sugar cane, rum and spices from the West Indies. These new ingredients inspired a Nantes fouacier who imagined a cake for long-distance sailors that could be kept for several weeks and still retain all its flavour.
The Nantes cake was born, and sailors enjoyed this sweet treat on their long crossings.
